More than Reese Witherspoon and Kate Hudson, her prime rivals among early-30s contenders for the Roberts ring, Katherine Heigl radiated a pensive solidity that, if properly exploited, could have spurred the return of a warmer, less dizzy brand of romantic comedy.

I speak in the past tense, since Katherine Heigl comes near to emptying her reserves of goodwill with a disastrous new concoction called The Ugly Truth. In its wan attempt to be raunchy, the picture fails where Judd Apatow has usually succeeded; written by three women, this is a girl's mistaken idea of an R-rated comedy. Mike is a macho man with a Cro-Magnon spin on sex, telling his female listeners, "We fall in love with your tits and your ass. And we stick around for what you're gonna do with them." It's probably what any person seeking out a film starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler -- with a surprising, and totally warranted based on language alone, R rating -- as total opposites that, at first, can't stand being in the same room together, would expect. Police have said the bomb threat was made over the telephone, although no further details have been released.

It seems romantic comedies, the genre currently aiding Heigl in her quest of movie stardom, needs to step it up.

Before sticking it to the genre, she starts with the compliments, acknowledging something good about her new Movies reviews, The Ugly Truth, "I know this is going to sound bad but I'm really glad it's an R. I didn't want to do another PG-13 movie."

Then she elaborates about the nature of relationships: "You're probably going to drop the F-bomb once in a while. You're probably going to say some things that are kind of harsh. And you're definitely going to talk about sex. It doesn’t have to be so Snow White and Prince Charming. That's my problem with a lot of romantic comedies: Everyone spends so much time trying to make sure it's the fairytale because that's what the rating calls for."

Now we're not entirely convinced that her new R-rated movie doesn't have a tidy fairy-tale ending given the trailer. And, in fact, her last "sexist" R-rated rom-com had a perfect happy ending, too, but whatever to things that make sense! What Katherine Heigl demands, Katherine Heigl gets, or she won't be submitting her name to any awards shows.

So someone better get on writing her an R-rated romantic comedy with an unhappy ending that could end in an Oscar, and she'll send you one of these for your dining room (it will surely impress your guests).

Whatever plot twists the Grey's Anatomy writers are planning, they can't possibly be as dramatic - or at least as suspenseful, in the literal sense of something suspended that never actually falls - as the rumored exits of cast members Katherine Heigl and T.R. Knight.

Lingering for months already, this particular bit of off-screen gossip of this plus size model was heightened yesterday by a new report that quotes fellow cast member James Pickens, Jr., as declaring that Heigl and Knight are as good as gone from the ABC medical drama.

Katherine Heigl is a sometime movie star (some of her Knocked Up quotes were pretty funny) with a well-documented fondness for saying seemingly unguarded and possibly career-jeopardizing things, like dissing the series with a grandiose gesture.

That being removing herself from Emmy consideration last year and saying "the material I was given" failed to warrant consideration. This after winning the previous year.

T.R. Knight, who was at the center of an ugly gay-baiting incident involving former co-star Isaiah Washington, is reportedly unhappy with what he feels is limited screen time.

A couple points, however, are getting lost in the scuffle to squeeze some sort of definitive news from Pickens' comments, according to the L.A. Times ...

First, how does Pickens know for sure that either one of his costars is leaving?

Actors are not always the most reliable sources of dish on upcoming scripts, let alone information about what's happening off the set.

For the record, Grey's Anatomy, network and studio sources have declined comment on the Heigl-Knight adult model issue, as have PR reps for the two actors themselves.

That leads the second point: Why should anyone comment and ruin all this great suspense? Now in its fifth season, Grey's Anatomy needs all the help it can get.

Back in the day - the 2006-2007 season, to be precise, when it averaged a record 19.9 viewers - it was ABC's top-rated scripted show and bona fide sensation.

That all seems like a very, very long time ago.

Some fans have complained about this season's story lines - particularly the remergence of "Dead Denny," a deceased former love interest of Heigl's character surgical resident Izzie Stevens - and the show is slogging through its worst-ever ratings, averaging 15.1 million.

A current arc of interlocking episodes with the Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice seems to be boosting the latter show without doing much to help the former.

So by keeping the Katherine Heigl-T.R. Knight drama alive, was James Pickens, Jr., just been doing what he could to help out the home team. Or speaking candidly?

The film, written by Aline Brosh McKenna (who also penned The Devil Wears Prada) and based in part on the story of one of McKenna's friends, is frothy, crowd-pleasing rom-com stuff and has already done swift business at the American box office, having made around $80million.

Having made her name in the hugely popular medical drama Grey's Anatomy as the lovelorn Dr Izzie Stevens, and then followed it up with last year's surprise summer hit movie, Knocked Up, she is strongly being touted by the industry as The Next Julia Roberts - a prediction which predictably makes her blanch.

"To be honest, it's too much pressure to believe that I could ever fill her shoes," she says, "and I can't help but feel that it's a little insulting to her to have that said about her.

"In any case, I think Julia Roberts herself has the whole Julia Roberts thing well under control."

Ever since The Real Julia Roberts ditched romantic comedies to take on meatier roles, the quest has been on to find her replacement and, with Heigl's latest film, many critics think they have found her.

In 27 Dresses, which premieres in London next week, she plays Jane - a perennial bridesmaid, yet never the bride, having organised the weddings of no fewer than 27 friends and donned 27 hideous bridesmaid dresses in the process.

A people-pleaser who puts the feelings of others before her own like fitness models, Jane stands back and says nothing when her glamorous sister Tess (Malin Akerman) comes to visit and falls for Jane's boss George (Edward Burns) - the man with whom Jane has been secretly in love for several years.

While attending the weddings of two friends on the same night, Jane loses her personal organiser which is found, as only movie luck would have it, by the devastatingly handsome journalist Kevin Doyle (James Marsden of X Men and Hairspray fame), who pens the Engagements page for the New York City Journal.

Seeing acres of weddings laid out across every weekend of Jane's diary, Kevin senses a story is to be had from her, though in the course of pursuing it, naturally, he falls in love with her.

The question, though, is will Jane be able to register his considerable charms given that she is still painfully in love with George, and will George's relationship with Tess put the sisters on a messy collision course?

The film, written by Aline Brosh McKenna (who also penned The Devil Wears Prada) and based in part on the story of one of McKenna's friends, is frothy, crowd-pleasing rom-com stuff and has already done swift business at the American box office, having made around $80million.

In the film, Heigl has dyed her blonde locks mousy brown (the time-honoured Hollywood shortcut for dazzling actresses to suddenly become "plain"), and while in the flesh one might describe her as extremely pretty rather than a bombshell, on screen she certainly exudes that something extra.

Katherine Heigl's decision this week to take herself out of the running for an Emmy has fueled rumors she might be leaving "Grey's Anatomy."

Heigl, who earned an Emmy for her work on the show last year, took herself out of contention for this year's Emmy race because she felt her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, had not been given adequate material.

Recently, Heigl signed on to star in and produce a movie based on the book "Escape" by Carolyn Jessop, the former Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints member who fled the polygamous sect and helped convict leader Warren Jeffs.

While it is not unusual for TV advertise modeling stars to film movies during hiatus, insiders wonder if the deal following closely on the heels of her Emmy snub indicates that Heigl soon will be leaving the show, the New York Post reported.

ABC and "Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes were not commenting on Heigl's remarks, nor was her publicist.

Rocker Josh Kelly is opening up for the first time about his wife Katherine Heigl's Emmy drama and how they're dealing with the media.

Hollyscoop caught up with Kelly at the “Ryan Sheckler X Games Celebrity Skins Classic” golf tournament on Tuesday, where he told us: “I think its all overplayed and all stretched out, anybody who lives in the media, you know its pretty stretched out, but it is what it is.

"When you get into the entertainment business usually most people get into knowing that the possibilities of these things happening are could be a reality I think you just try to get strong, deal with it move on and make your art."

In regards to how they are dealing with the negative publicity, Josh said, "Were pretty strong cats, I don’t think so, we cook in a lot, watch a lot of TV, and just chill out and keep it simple."
